Subversion does authorization via mod_authz_svn. We are not altering or patching these apps in any way. The functionality still comes from the apps themselves. Keep in mind that Subversion Edge is a packaging of these open-source apps with a GUI to help configure them. VisualSVN is still my Subversion server distribution of choice on Windows. I would like to have had more configuration via the UI and not having authorisation is a pain if you don’t have control over your AD.

After trying from another machine with Flash installed I got some pretty graphs – shame the Web UI didn’t tell me I needed Flash.Įdge comes with ViewCV installed giving you browser-based navigation of your SVN repositories, but I didn’t like it as much as WebSVN that I have installed on another (Debian) server. When I tried to view these there were no graphs, but after a search I discovered that I needed Adobe Flash installed (which I don’t on that particular machine). The Web UI also has a statistics tab with graphs showing bandwidth and disk usage. Setting up a repository was easy but there was a very limited amount that I could configure via the Web UI e.g. Edge also only gives you authentication not authorisation, and as I don’t have any control over our companies AD I don’t have the fine-grained access controls available (at least not without quite a bit more work). With ReviewBoard I could simply tell it to discover the AD information via DNS, which worked really well, but Edge didn’t give me that option. I found this post really helpful – Understanding Collabnet’s LDAP Binding. This was harder work than with VisualSVN, where AD authentication is simply a checkbox option, as you have to supply all the LDAP information.

I didn’t find the UI that stunning to look at, but hey, it’s an admin console! First job was to get AD authentication set up. After about a minute the launcher told me that the console had started and we were up and running. Our Internet access is via a proxy and I suspected that it might be trying to call home and failing, so I configured the proxy (by setting up a http_proxy environment variable) and restarted the Edge service. After a few minutes of waiting… I got impatient.

After the install finished I was presented with a launcher web page telling me to wait while the console was starting. The install went reasonably smoothly, although I was told that a Java 6 runtime was required, which the installer offered to get for me, but I ended up having to install it myself.

I was particularly interested in their Web-based administration, as it would help if more people in the team knew how to feed and water the SVN server and didn’t have to Remote Desktop onto the box to do so.

It’s available for multiple platforms and a Windows MSI is supplied for easy installation. I regularly get email from CollabNet about their products so I though I would give CollabNet Subversion Edge a try.Įdge is really three things in one – a ‘certified’ SVN stack, Apache and ViewCV. Buying anything in the company tends to rather tricky, so we’ve happily been using the Standard (and free) Edition but it was a little annoying not having the Remote Administration feature and therefore having to Remote Desktop onto the server any time stuff needed doing. However, some functionality is only available in the Enterprise Edition (access logging, remote admin, integrated authentication). There’s a management Snap in, nice integration with Active Directory with fine-grained access control and it generally keeps all the settings and configuration accessible in a way that anyone used to managing a Windows box can cope with. Being almost exclusively a Windows shop, VisualSVN fitted very well as it does Subversion the Windows way. As we are just about to start a major rewrite of our software, I’m taking the opportunity to review our toolset.
